for mercy

He loves the idea
more than he loves
the act of crying

He has seduced himself
with the image
of his repentance

How very pious
he must be

And surely
when the time came
he was like an actor
playing his part
and crying

But
he is showing off
nobody is watching
yet he is showing off
for himself

If only he truly meant it
from the heart
